I’ve been on a hair journey of sorts over the past four years. After the pandemic forced salons to close, I realized that growing out my bob — and simultaneously an undercut and a set of bangs — was really the only available option. I toyed with the idea of buzzing it all off but I was dating someone who already Bic’ed his head and I thought we would look too matchy matchy for my liking.
By summer 2020, when salons could re-open with strict mask policies in place, I eventually shaped it all up with another chin-skimming bob. Ever since then I’ve been impatiently waiting for my hair to reach J-Law mermaid status, with only a twice yearly trim to minimize weighty layers. So, naturally, I want to cut it all off again because I am difficult, easily bored, and tired of plowing through half a bottle of conditioner every time I wash my hair.
However, given that I’m 34 and work in the beauty industry, I’ve tried just about every trendy haircut and color under the sun, and as much as I like the idea of playing around with this or that new style, I’ve come to a somewhat somber realization: I think I’ve arrived at my Look.
There are hair chameleons that are able to transform themselves every few years — or sometimes months — and still retain the core of their signature beauty style, whether that’s funky, classic, retro, rocker, indie, etc. There are some people who are more adept at this than others…
